Functional Communication Training

So often, challenging behavior is really communication in disguise — a child saying "I need something" the only way they can. Functional Communication Training gives your child a clear, reliable way to express that need, so frustration has somewhere better to go.

What It Is

A closer look at functional communication training

Functional Communication Training, or FCT, is an ABA approach that teaches a child a functional way to communicate a need — replacing a challenging behavior that was serving the same purpose. The core idea is simple but powerful: if a behavior like screaming or hitting is how a child says "I want a break" or "help me," we teach them a clearer, more effective way to say it.

It begins with understanding. A BCBA first identifies what a behavior is communicating — its function — usually through a Functional Behavior Assessment. Then they choose a replacement communication response that's easier and works at least as well for your child. That might be a word or phrase, a sign, a picture exchange, or a button on a device, depending on what suits your child best.

A Registered Behavior Technician teaches and reinforces the new communication response consistently, so your child learns it reliably gets them what they need. As the helpful new way of communicating takes hold, the challenging behavior typically fades — because your child finally has a better tool that actually works.

Who It's For

Who benefits most

Children whose challenging behaviors seem driven by frustration
Kids who are nonverbal or have very limited communication
Children who act out because they can't express what they need
Kids who would benefit from signs, pictures, or a communication device
Children working to replace behaviors like hitting or screaming with words
Families seeking a positive, communication-first approach to behavior
What to Expect

How it actually works

Everything starts with figuring out what your child is trying to communicate. Your BCBA observes and assesses the behavior to pinpoint its function — for example, escaping a hard task, asking for attention, or requesting a favorite item.

Next, your BCBA selects a replacement communication response that fits your child — a spoken word, a sign, a picture card, or a device button — and makes sure it's easy enough that your child can succeed quickly. Your RBT then teaches it in everyday moments, prompting and heavily reinforcing the new response so your child learns it works every time.

Over time, as the new communication becomes reliable, the old challenging behavior has less reason to occur. Because this happens in your home, your child practices in real situations, and you're coached to honor and reinforce the new communication too — so it sticks across your whole day.

Getting Started

How Getting Started Works

From your first phone call to your child's first session — and every step after — here's exactly how it goes.

1

Talk to a BCBA

Call, text, or fill out the form. A real person picks up, and a BCBA calls you back for an honest conversation about your child — no scripts, no sales pitch.

2

In-Home Assessment

Your BCBA meets your child where they're comfortable — at home — to understand their strengths, their challenges, and what matters most to your family.

3

We Verify Your Insurance

We call your insurance, confirm your benefits, and tell you exactly what's covered before anything starts. Most Iowa families pay little or nothing. Zero surprises.

4

Therapy Starts at Home

We match your child with the therapist who's the right fit and build a plan around their goals. Sessions start in the comfort of your home, on your schedule.

5

Progress You Can See

Your BCBA tracks every goal and reviews the data with you regularly. You'll always know what's working, what's next, and how far your child has come.

6

We Stick With You

As your child grows, we adjust the plan, keep coaching you, and stay just a text away. This is a long-haul partnership — not a drop-off and goodbye.

FAQs

Questions About Functional Communication Training

Straight answers. If yours isn't here, just call or text us.

FCT doesn't require speech. The replacement communication can take many forms — a sign, a picture exchange, or a button on a speech-generating device — whatever gives your child a reliable, effective way to express their need. The point is functional communication, in whatever form works best for your child.

Many challenging behaviors are a way of communicating an unmet need. When we teach your child a clearer, easier way to express that same need — and make sure it reliably works — the behavior usually has less reason to happen. FCT replaces the behavior with a better tool rather than just trying to suppress it.

It depends on your child and the behavior involved. Some children pick up a new communication response fairly quickly, while others need more time and repetition. Consistency is key — your BCBA tracks progress and adjusts the plan, and reinforcing the new communication at home speeds things along.

Yes. As part of a medically necessary ABA treatment plan for autism, FCT is covered by Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and other commercial plans, with Iowa Medicaid coming soon. Most Iowa families pay little to nothing out of pocket.
